What the Calculator Tells You (And What It Doesn't)

The calculator gives you a solid starting point: number of panels, total system size in kW, estimated cost range, and payback period. It uses typical values from the NREL 2023 cost benchmark and EnergySage's 2024 market report. For example, the average cost per watt is $2.95, and the federal tax credit is 30% through 2032. But here's the thing—your actual numbers depend on your local installer's pricing, your utility's net metering policy, and any state incentives. Our tool is meant to help you compare options, not replace a professional quote. I've found that taking these numbers to three installers gets you the best deal. Also, the calculator assumes a 0.5% annual degradation rate for panels, which is industry standard. Most panels still produce at 80% after 25 years.
