How the Numbers Work

Here's what goes into our estimates:

System size: Anywhere from 4 kW to 15 kW. For most homes, you're looking at around 7.5 kW.

Cost per watt: Usually between $2.50 and $3.50. Nationwide, the average is about $2.95 per watt.

Total system cost: Before any tax credits, you're talking $10,000 to $35,000. A typical setup runs about $22,000.

Federal tax credit: You get 30% back through 2032. On a typical system, that saves you around $6,600.

Annual production: You'll generate about 1,000 to 1,800 kWh per kW of panels each year. The national average is 1,350.

Payback period: It takes 5 to 15 years to break even. Most folks hit that in about 9 years.

Panel efficiency: Between 15% and 24%. Normal panels these days are around 20%.

Degradation rate: Panels lose about 0.3% to 0.7% efficiency per year. Average is 0.5%.

Inverter cost: Expect to pay $1,000 to $2,500. Budget around $1,500.

Honestly, these are just national averages. Your local electricity rates, roof orientation, and shading make a huge difference. The calculator figures in some of that, but for a real deal, you'd need someone to come check out your place. Still, this gets you 90% of the way there.

Solar vs. Grid: What You're Really Paying

After that, it's pure profit. Your panels will still produce at 88% capacity after 25 years (0.5% degradation per year). Caveat: This won't work if you have heavy tree shading or a north-facing roof. How many solar panels do I need for a 2,000 sq ft house?
Typically 20-30 panels for a 2,000 sq ft home. But it depends more on your electricity usage (kWh/month) than square footage. A home using 1,000 kWh/month needs about 25 panels (400W each). Use our calculator with your actual electric bill for an accurate number.
Do I need a battery with my solar panels?
